My daughter and I saw Pitch Perfect 2 (Universal Pictures) earlier in the week. If you liked the first movie, you’ll like the second one too. The story is basically the same, but you can’t help but smile and laugh. Like the first film, the tunes are excellent and will make you want to sing along. Pitch Perfect 2 opens in theaters today. Six Things About Pitch Perfect 2
It’s a sequel — duh
It’s helpful to see the first Pitch Perfect movie, but you don’t need to in order to understand the sequel. Here’s what you missed in the first film. The Bellas are an all-girls singing group at Barden University. They were at the top of their game until one of the leads threw-up in a big a singing competition. To get past their embarrassment, the Bellas are determined to reclaim their crown in the national championship. But first, the new team, which is made up mostly of freshmen, have to stop bickering and then sing as a team. The sequel takes place three years later.
The storyline is different, but it feels the same
In this sequel, the Bellas are on top once again. They have won the nationals three straight time. But then a wardrobe malfunction goes viral and the team is once again in disgrace. After the big public backlash, the Bellas are suspended from the national circuit. The only way they can get their suspension lifted is if they compete and win the international competition, which no American group has ever done. The storyline is different, but to me, it seems like the same. The main difference is that the Bellas are now trying to win at the international level instead of the national level. And just like before, the Bellas are underdogs.
Fat Amy moons President Obama
Remember the wardrobe malfunction I mentioned in the previous paragraph? Well that wardrobe malfunction resulted in Fat Amy mooning President Obama and the First Lady. You couldn’t really see anything, but it was really funny.
Pitch Perfect 2 is very entertaining
The movie was very predictable and some of the story elements were absurd, but the film was still very entertaining. Some parts of the story were funny and the singing was great. Pitch Perfect 2 is one of those entertaining movie that will make you smile, laugh and sing along.
Most of the cast is back
I don’t remember all the characters from the first Pitch Perfect movie, but I think most of the cast is back in the sequel. Anna Kendrick (Beca) and Rebel Wilson (Fat Amy) are excellent again. New to the cast is Hailee Steinfeld (Emily). She was great in True Grit, but only OK in Pitch Perfect 2. Other cast members include Brittany Snow (Chloe), Skylar Astin (Jesse), Adam DeVine (Bumper), Katey Sagal (Katherine), Anna Camp (Aubrey), Ben Platt (Benji), Alexis Knapp (Stacie), Hana Mae Lee (Lilly), Ester Dean (Cynthia Rose), Chrissie Fit (Flo), Birgitte Hjort Sørensen (Kommissar), and Flula Borg (Pieter Krämer). Pitch Perfect 2 was directed by Elizabeth Banks, who also played the part of a judge in the film.
Pitch Perfect 2 is rated PG-13
The 115-minute movie is rated PG-13 for innuendo and language. There wasn’t any nudity or sex scenes. However, there was some bad language. But it wasn’t too bad.
