Rio 2 Blu-ray

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment sent me a copy of Rio 2 for review on my movie blog. As you can tell by its title, it’s a sequel to the first Rio movie. And just like the first animated film, Rio 2 is a delightful movie for the entire family. The story is funny, the characters are interesting, the songs are lively, and the scenery is fantastic. I can see why Rio 2 took in almost half a billion dollars at the box office world wide. It’s a movie you’ll want to watch with your kids. Probably multiple times. Rio 2 is available now on 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD. Continue reading to learn seven things about Rio 2.

Seven Things About Rio 2 Blu-ray

  1. The sequel takes place several years later
Rio 2 takes place several years after the first Rio movie. Blu and Jewel (blue macaws) have three kids now, and they all live with Linda and Tulio (humans). One day, Linda and Tulio discover evidence to suggest there may be other blue macaws in the rain forest. While they are searching for the blue macaws, the group stumbles across a large flock led by Jewel’s father. Meanwhile, loggers are destroying the rain forest, and the blue macaws have to stop them.

  2. Rio 2 features a nature theme
The film has a nature theme on two fronts. First, Blu is dependent on technology while Jewel is in tune with nature. Through out the story, Blu’s dependence on technology results in one hilarious situation after another. The second nature theme has to deal with the battle between the loggers and the birds. The loggers want to clear the rain forest to build more homes and shopping malls, while the macaws want to just save the land they grew up in.

  3. It’s fun for the entire family
Rio 2 is one of those films that both parents and children will enjoy. The movie is funny, the characters are interesting, and the songs are lively. And because the movie is rated G, you know it’s safe for your kids to watch. BTW, the movie is 101 minutes long.

  4. The main cast members return in the sequel
Jesse Eisenberg (Blu), Anne Hathaway (Jewel), Leslie Mann (Linda), and Rodrigo Santoro (Tulio) are back in Rio 2. In addition, new voice talents include Bruno Mars (Roberto), Kristin Chenoweth (Gabi), and Andy Garcia (Eduardo). Other voices are George Lopez (Rafael), Sergio Mendes (Street Vendor), Kate Micucci (Tiny), Janelle Monáe (Dr. Monae), Natalie Morales (Newscaster), Rita Moreno (Aunt Mimi), Tracy Morgan (Luiz), Will i Am (Pedro), Jake T. Austin (Fernando), Carlinhos Brown (Audition Bird), Jemaine Clement (Nigel), Jim Conroy (Capoeira Turtle), Rachel Crow (Carla), Bernardo de Paula (Carnival Barker / Blue Sentry), Nola Donkin (Opera Bird), Miguel Ferrer (Big Boss), Jamie Foxx (Nico), Pierce Gagnon (Tiago), Jeffrey Garcia (Spoonbill / Perl), and Bebel Gilberto (Eva). Rio 2 was directed by Carlos Saldanha.

  5. The musical numbers are great
As expected, Bruno Mars’ musical numbers are great. Actually, the movie is full of great songs that are entertaining for both kids and parents. After watching the movie, I wanted to buy the soundtrack.

  6. Get a free Rio 2 lunchbox at Best Buy
You can purchase Rio 2 almost anywhere, but if you purchase it at Best Buy, you can get a free, limited edition lunchbox. It’s an exclusive back to school bonus at Best Buy only. The lunchbox is metallic and reminds me of the old metal lunch boxes I grew up with. Very retro. BTW, even though it’s a lunchbox, you can actually use it for other things — like a school supplies box. Note: according to one reader, the lunchbox was $5 with purchase.

  7. The Blu-ray is loaded with special features

The DVD includes several bonus features, but the Blu-ray includes even more extras. There are so many features that the kids and I have not had time to watch them all yet. But according to the press material, the Blu-ray includes over an hour of special features (including 15 exclusive levels of Angry Birds Rio and two bonus songs):

    1. That’s odd. I saw it advertised in our local newspaper last week – free lunchox with purchase of Rio 2 while supplies last. Maybe the promo ended on Saturday. When did you purchase it?
