I recently watched Love & Mercy (Lionsgate). The film is about the co-founder of Beach Boys. This isn’t one of those movies that tell the story of how a group of young men follow their passion and became the popular Beach Boys that some of us grew up with. Love and Mercy is actually a drama about the troubled life of Brian. It’s a sad story, but in the end, I learned a lot more about Brian and the Beach Boys. Love & Mercy is available now on Blu-ray and DVD. Continue reading to learn four things about the movie.
Four Things About Love & Mercy
Love & Mercy takes place in two time periods
Love & Mercy is the story of Brian Wilson at two pivotal stages of his life. As some of you know, Brian is the co-founder of the Beach Boys. The story starts off in the 1960’s when the Beach Boys were at their peak. The story then flashes forward to the 1980’s when Brian, with the help of a new love, was trying to reclaim his life after a mental breakdown. The story flashes back and fourth between these two time periods. As the story progress, we see how the pressure of creating the greatest album of all time contributed to Brian’s mental breakdown.
Film stars John Cusack and Paul Dano
In the movie, John Cusack played the part of the older Brian Wilson, while Paul Dano played the part of the younger Brian Wilson. Other notable cast members include Elizabeth Banks (Melinda Ledbetter) and Paul Giamatti (Dr. Eugene Landy). The cast also includes Jake Abel (Mike Love), Joanna Going (Audree Wilson), Kenny Wormald (Dennis Wilson), Graham Rogers (Al Jardine), Tyson Ritter (hipster), Brett Davern (Carl Wilson), Nick Gehlfuss (Bruce Johnston), Erin Darke (Marilyn Wilson), Max Schneider (Van Dyke Parks), and Bill Camp (Murry Wilson). Love and Mercy was directed by Bill Pohlad.
Love & Mercy is rated PG-13
The 121-minute movie is rated PG-13 for thematic elements, drug content and language. There was an implied sex scene. Other than that, the film is fine for most kids.
