5 Things About McFarland, USA

McFarland, USA

I watched McFarland, USA over the weekend. Walt Disney Studios sent me the Blu-ray for review on my film blog. The movie is about a coach that starts a cross country team even though he has no track related experience. If you love films based on a true story, then you’ll probably like McFarland, USA. The movie is based on actual events. The film should also appeal to people who love over-achieving underdogs stories. Personally, I thought the pace of the movie was too slow, but I still enjoyed the film. It’s an inspiring story — especially if you’re Hispanic. McFarland, USA will be available on DVD, Blu-ray, Disney Movies Anywhere, and Digital HD on June 2nd. Continue reading to learn five things about the Blu-ray.

Five Things About McFarland, USA

  1. McFarland, USA is an inspiring story about a high school cross country team
The story is about the McFarland High School cross country team. Jim White was fired as football coach at another school. Because of his past history, White ends up as an assistant football coach at a predominantly Mexican-American high school. White has an altercation with the head coach during the first game, which leads to White’s dismissal from the McFarland football team. He then convinces the principal to start a cross country team. White recruits runners for his team, but he discovers that many of his runners have family obligations that require them to work in the fields. White knows he has good runners on his team, but he has to figure a way to convince their families to let their kids run for him. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention White is not a runner and has never coached track or cross country before.

  2. The movie is based on a true story
McFarland, USA is based on the cross team at McFarland High School. However, some elements were changed. For instance, Coach White became the coach in 1980 and had been a teacher in the McFarland school district since 1964. In the movie, White came to McFarland in 1987 after he was fired as football coach at a different school. In fact, White was never fired. In the film, White has two daughters. In real life, he had three girls. On the other hand, McFarland did indeed win nine state cross country championships, and the coach did prevent a runner from jumping off a bridge.

  3. McFarland, USA stars Kevin Costner
Kevin Costner plays the part of the main character, Jim White. I thought Costner was very believable as the coach of the cross country team. McFarland, USA also featured Ramiro Rodriguez (Danny Diaz), Carlos Pratts (Thomas Valles), Johnny Ortiz (Jose Cardenas), Rafael Martinez (David Diaz), Hector Duran (Johnny Sameniego), Sergio Avelar (Victor Puentes), Michael Aguero (Damacio Diaz), Diana Maria Riva (Señora Diaz), Omar Leyva (Señor Diaz), Valente Rodriguez (Principal Camillo), Danny Mora (Sammy Rosaldo), Maria Bello (Cheryl White), Morgan Saylor (Julie White), and Elsie Fisher (Jamie White). The movie was directed by Niki Caro (Whale Rider).

  4. The sports drama is rated PG
McFarland, USA is rated PG for thematic material, some violence and language. In my opinion, the 129-minute film is fine for the entire family.

  5. Both the DVD and Blu-ray includes bonus features
The Blu-ray version includes the movie on Blu-ray and digital HD (Disney Movies Anywhere). Both the DVD and Blu-ray includes some special features:

    • McFarland Reflections (Blu-ray only)
Kevin Costner, Coach Jim White and members of the 1987 cross-country team look back on the bonds they forged and the opportunities they were given

    • Inspiring McFarland
