The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be amazing to some movie goers and not so amazing to others. My son and I both enjoyed the film, but I thought the first Spiderman movie was more interesting. On the other hand, my son likes this movie better than the first one. On the positive side, I thought the specials effects in Spiderman 2 were fabulous and the 3D effects were good too. In this second movie, the director seems to focus on making the hero more like the wise-cracking web-slinger in the comic books. At times, the wise cracks hit their mark. But other times, the humor seemed forced. The 142-minute film is rated PG-13. It opens in theaters today. Continue reading to learn seven things about The Amazing Spider-Man 2 movie.
7 Things About The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Film
Spiderman is haunted by the death of Gwen Stacy’s father
You don’t really need to see the first movie in the rebooted Spiderman series to understand the second film. There’s really only a few things you need to know. First, Peter Parker was bitten by a radioactive spider that gave him his super power. Second, Peter and Gwen Stacy are in love. Third, Gwen knows Peter is Spider-man. And finally, Gwen’s father died in the first movie and made Peter promise to stay away from Gwen in order to keep her safe. It’s this promise that keeps Peter from being happy even though he and Gwen are in love. Peter is conflicted and he even sees Gwen’s dead dad from time to time.
There are multiple storylines
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 features multiple storylines. First, there is the storyline about Peter’s and Gwen’s roller coaster relationship, which eventually leads to Gwen wanting to study at Oxford in England. A second storyline is the origin of Electro. He was a needy man that became a freak due to an accident involving electrical eels. Another storyline involves the mysterious disappearance of Peter’s parents. Through a series of flashbacks we discover what happened to them and why they left Peter with Aunt May and Uncle Ben. Finally, there’s the storyline about Harry Osborn’s transformation to the Green Goblin. Harry is an old friend of Peter who returned to see his father, Norman, at his death bed.
There’s a big shocker in the film
Near the end of the movie, there is a big shocker. I’m not going to spoil it for you by revealing it, but if you’ve read the Spiderman comic books then you can probably guess what will happen. In my opinion, the shocker was a good point to end the movie. Instead, the story continued for at least another ten minutes.
The film teases you with a bunch of villains
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 gives you hints of a multitude of villains like Electro, Green Goblin, Felicia (Black Cat), Alistair Smythe (Ultimate Spider-Slayer), Rhino, Vulture, and Doctor Octopus. But in this movie, the only villains you see in action are Electro, Green Goblin and Rhino. Electro is the main villain, but the Green Goblin also has a big fight scene near the end of the story. Spiderman also fights Rhino, but it’s kinda brief and he’s very different from the comic books. In the graphic novels, Rhino is super tough and wore some sort of indestructible skin suit. But in the film, Rhino is essentially a huge robotic rhino with machine guns.
Some scenes didn’t make sense
This is a superhero movie, so you’re suppose to suspend belief and just go with the flow. But it annoys me when they do silly things like have Electro disperse from his physical body, and then reform as an entity made up of energy. But when he reforms, he appears with shorts to cover his private parts. Electro is made up of energy so they could’ve just simply left out various body parts. Shorts were not needed. And in another scene, Electro creates a new outfit for himself. Electro has the power to control electricity. How does that give him the ability to create clothes?
Stan Lee makes another cameo
The movie was made by Sony Pictures, but it’s still a Marvel film so you can expect Stan Lee to make a cameo appearance. This time around, Stan appears early in the film. He’s in the audience of Peter Parker’s high school graduation commencement.
Dane DeHaan stood out
Andrew Garfield (Spider-Man / Peter Parker) and Emma Stone (Gwen Stacy) reprise their role as the main characters in Spiderman 2. Jamie Foxx also joins the cast as Electro and Max Dillon. All three of them were fine in the film. However, in my opinion, Dane DeHaan stood out. I’m not saying he was the best actor in the movie, but his character intrigued me. Dane play the part of Harry Osborn and the Green Goblin. Other actors include Colm Feore (Donald Menken), Felicity Jones (Felicia), Paul Giamatti (Aleksei Sytsevich), Sally Field (Aunt May), Embeth Davidtz (Mary Parker), Campbell Scott (Richard Parker), Marton Csokas (Dr. Ashley Kafka), Louis Cancelmi (Man in Black Suit), Max Charles (Young Peter Parker), B.J. Novak (Alistair Smythe), and Sarah Gadon (Kari). The film was directed by Marc Webb.
