In the Heart of the Sea (Chris Hemsworth)

New movies this weekend include In the Heart of the Sea (Chris Hemsworth), The Big Short (Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Brad Pitt), The Dark Horse (Cliff Curtis), Don Verdean (Sam Rockwell), and Snervous Tyler Oakley (documentary). I have not seen any of the films, but In the Heart of the Sea and The Big Short look the most interesting. Continue reading for summaries and trailers of the new movies for this weekend.

New Movies

In the Heart of the Sea

In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick. But that told only half the story. In the Heart of the Sea reveals the encounter’s harrowing aftermath, as the ship’s surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate still seeks to bring the great whale down.

The Big Short

When four outsiders saw what the big banks, media and government refused to, the global collapse of the economy, they had an idea: The Big Short. Their bold investment leads them into the dark underbelly of modern banking where they must question everyone and everything. Based on the true story and best-selling book by Michael Lewis (The Blind Side, Moneyball), and directed by Adam Mckay (Anchorman, Step Brothers) The Big Short stars Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt.

The Dark Horse

The Dark Horse is an emotionally-charged, provocative drama about a man who searches for the courage to lead, despite his own adversities — finding purpose and hope in passing on his gift to the children in his community. Starring an extraordinary NZ cast; Cliff Curtis (Whale Rider and Boy), James Rolleston (Boy) and Kirk Torrance (Outrageous Fortune). The Dark Horse is an inspiring true story based on the life of a charismatic, brilliant but little-known New Zealand Hero and chess champion — Genesis Potini, aka Gen.

Don Verdean

Hired by an ambitious small-town pastor to find sacred relics in the Holy Land, a self-proclaimed Biblical archaeologist comes up short and his attempt to cover up his failure fuels a comic conspiracy from the filmmaking team behind Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre. Don Verdean stars Sam Rockwell, Amy Ryan, Jemaine Clement, Leslie Bibb, with Will Forte, and Danny McBride.

Snervous Tyler Oakley

After eight years of sharing snippets of his life online, see the intimate truth of Tyler Oakley’s relationship with family, followers and fame on his sold out international tour.
